La Bisbal d’Empordà, where ceramics shape the landscape
In La Bisbal, ceramics are landscape and memory: industrial chimneys cutting into the sky, streets devoted to the sale of pieces, and a museum housed in a former factory. The first documented reference to local ceramic manufacture dates from 1502 — a “forn d’olles” is mentioned — and since then clay has been an economic and cultural engine of the municipality.
The Terracotta Museu (opened in 1991) occupies a rehabilitated ceramic factory; it preserves original production elements (kilns, chimneys, clay deposits, mills…) and explains the industrialisation of the craft in the area. Its permanent collection exceeds 10,000 pieces, including works, tools and equipment.
This identity is now protected by the community trademark “Cerámica de la Bisbal” (EU registration 8723504), which distinguishes the origin and quality of local production.
